Finally getting through the books you never finished
Most people who buy a lot of books finish a fraction of them. It usually isn’t discipline — it’s that reading needs your hands, your eyes and a quiet room at the same time.
Why the pile grows
Buying a book takes thirty seconds. Reading one takes nine hours of a very particular kind of attention — undistracted, seated, with both eyes and both hands committed. That kind of attention is the scarcest thing most working adults have, and it is the only kind reading accepts.
So the gap isn’t willpower. It’s that buying and reading draw on completely different budgets, and only one of them is nearly empty.
The hours nobody counts
The commute. The gym. The washing up. The walk to get coffee. None of those need your eyes, and together they are usually more time than anyone manages to sit down and read in a week.
The catch is that a book can’t go there. An audiobook can — which is why people who “don’t have time to read” often get through a book a month once it’s something they can listen to.
Why “just use text-to-speech” doesn’t fix it
Because a nine-hour audio file with no chapters isn’t a book — it’s a recording. Lose your place once and there is nowhere to go back to. The pile stays a pile; it just becomes audio.
What changes it is structure: chapters you can leave and return to, a position that survives switching devices, and a voice you can live with for nine hours. That is the difference between a file that reads text aloud and something you actually finish.
Where to start
Not the most impressive book on the pile — the one you feel worst about. Guilt is a surprisingly good filter, because it marks the book you genuinely meant to read rather than the one you meant to have read.
