How long does it take to listen to a book?

Pages give a range because density varies: 250–350 words a page is normal for a trade paperback. Switch to words if you know the count.
Where the number comes from
Most calculators assume 150 words per minute, a figure that traces back to estimates of human reading pace rather than anything measured. This one is built from 990 samples of real synthesized narration, totalling 17.6 hours of audio that was actually generated and whose duration was measured rather than predicted.
The median works out at 15 characters per second, or roughly 158 words per minute at 1×. Close to the traditional figure, which is reassuring — but it is measured, and it lets the speed multipliers be exact rather than assumed.
What the estimate does not know
- Front and back matter. Index, notes and bibliography can be 10–20% of a book’s page count and nobody listens to them.
- Tables, code and figures. They either get skipped or read out in a way you will skip yourself.
- Your actual speed. Most people settle 1.25×–1.5× higher than they expect after the first hour.
