How to get the text out of your PDF

Open the PDF, select the text with your cursor, and copy it. If nothing highlights, the file is a scan — a picture of a page rather than text — and it needs OCR run on it before anything can read it aloud.

What this free preview will and will not do

  • It reads what you paste, in a natural voice, immediately.
  • It does not do a whole book. It stops at 1200 characters, about eighty seconds.
  • It does not save anything. Close the tab and it is gone.
  • It has no chapters, so there is nothing to skip between and no place to pick up from.
Where free stops being enough: a 400-page book is roughly eleven hours of listening. Pasting it a page at a time is not a plan. What makes a long book finishable is being split into chapters you can skip between, and remembering where you stopped — the arithmetic is here.

Doing a whole book

Echory takes a PDF or EPUB you have and returns it split into chapters, in any of ten voices, remembering where you stopped across devices. The first book is free and it does not ask for a card. Full disclosure: it is ours, and it is why this preview exists.

If you only ever need a page read aloud, the tool above is genuinely enough and there is nothing else to buy. The other free routes are here.
